How to maintain Permed Hair?

Do you always feel troubled and worried about your curls not staying in shape a few weeks after the perm? Fret not as we will be sharing everything you need to know about maintaining your curls and 3 do and don’ts for up keeping perm hair!

Dos

1) Moisturizing your hair

SOURCE

Due to strong chemicals being used in the perming process to create curls in the hair, your hair might be slightly damaged.

A good tip is to condition your hair everyday after you shampoo or you can opt for a leave-in conditioner.

Try to opt for shampoos that are sulfate and silicon free as these ingredients can dry out your hair and we definitely do not want that on our luscious locks. You may choose to use Naturia Keratin Organic Shampoo which is free of sulfates and silicons.

Hair Tip: Avoid washing your hair for 48 hours after you have permed your hair to let the perm set in.

2) Use a Wide Tooth Comb

SOURCE

To avoid damaging the curls in your hair, use a wide tooth comb as it encourages the formation of the curl as a unit rather than using a regular comb which breaks up the individual hairs.

Hair Tip: Try not to comb your hair for the first 24 hours right after your perm.

3) Switch to a Silk Pillowcase

SOURCE

Try switching out your cotton pillowcase to one that is made out of silk. A silk pillowcase would help to reduce friction between your curls and the pillowcase due to a smoother surface. Bid goodbye to split ends and frizzy hair!

Don’ts

1) Avoid Dyeing your hair

Source

Your hair goes through a lot after a perm thus it is not advisable to color your hair right after a perm. Coloring your hair immediately after a perm may result in your hair being more prone to damage (breaking easily), hair becomes over processed and over lighten. If you really still want a change in color for your hair, you should wait up to at least 2-3 weeks after getting a perm.

2) Avoid using Hair Styling Tools

source

Heat from hair styling tools ( Curler, Straightener, Hair Dryer ) can loosen the shape of your curls, and it might damage your curls and even cause your hair to be frizzy. If you need to use a hair dryer, make sure to apply a generous amount of heat protectant to protect your curls or try attaching a diffuser to your hair dryer so that your curls don’t appear frizzy.

3) Avoid getting into a swimming pool

source

Chlorine in swimming pools can cause your curls to dry out easily and may leave you with a tangled matted mess. But not to worry! Try to wait for at least a week before you return back to the pool. We suggest wearing a swimming cap to protect your curls and the importance of conditioning your hair afterwards.

To sum up, try to avoid any sort of styling or even simple hair styles to let the curls stay natural and in place. Even we deserve treats from time to time so…treat your hair to hair masks and condition frequently so your curls stay frizz free. Follow the dos and avoid the don’ts and you will be able to maintain your gorgeous curls in no time!
