What No One Tells You About Dyeing Your Hair

Some of you may be confused when we tell you that dyeing your hair or getting a balayage is not as damaging as bleaching your entire hair.

It’s true. Still, a no-bleach technique is able to lighten your hair from dark brown to light brown, if you want.

Balayage or Ombre?

Balayage is a word with french origins that stems from the word ‘balayer’ and it’s a technique in which the dye is painted on to create a natural and gradient look.

Key differences between balayage and ombre:

  • Hairstylists lighten hair instead of darken hair for a balayage.

  • Ombres typically involves in creating a shadow and dyeing the hair a darker colour.

This hair technique can involve bleach to lighten your hair if you have virgin black hair and want to get it to a light colour, but it can also be done by using a lightener, which is not as harsh and damaging to your hair.

Results from a balayage will vary if you have stubborn and non-porous hair.

Porosity levels, ranging from low, medium to high. Indicates the porosity of the hair cuticle.

How can you find out about your hair’s porosity level?

  • If your hair floats, your hair has low porosity.

  • If your hair sinks, your hair has high porosity.

Your hair's porosity level can be determined by dropping a strand of hair that has fallen off naturally into water. Let it rest for 2-4 minutes.

This hair porosity test shows how much moisture your hair absorbs. Hair with a low porosity are usually hair that has not been dyed or bleached before, so they require a stronger lightener to achieve the same colour.

Do consult with your trusted hair stylist on how you can achieve your favourite hair colours with minimal damage.
