How long does a perm last?

How long will my curls from my perm last? - Is a question that many of you may have before committing $200-$300 on a new look.

This perm lasted our customer only 2 months before the curls faded away! :(

Short answer: 2-3 months would be a safe range for the perm.

Long answer: it depends on how you take care of your curls and also the condition of your hair.

So which factors affect how long my curls last?

  1. The condition of your hair

If your hair is badly damaged to begin with, the curls are not likely to stay on for a long duration. This is because hair chemicals in general such as hair dyes and perm lotions damage your hair cuticles as you do more of them.

So our advice is:

  1. Get regular treatments from hair salons to keep your hair healthy! (We recommend our customers Chanamu Scalp Therapy as your health of your hair is largely correlated to your healthy scalp!)

  2. Use leave-in treatments to protect your hair from environmental damage such as the dirt from the outside. We recommend our Chanamu C if you’ve permed your hair as it will smoothens your hair and also create curls.

If you’re thinking of using essential oils, make sure that they’re not too heavy on your hair.

2. The type of perm (Cold vs. Hot)

Generally at DuSol beauty, we do hot perms on all our customers, called setting and digital perms. We don’t generally do cold perms because the heat is what creates shape onto the hair follicles, giving your hair shape. Without the essential heat and with just the perm lotion, it is very difficult to add long-lasting curls onto your hair.

Cold perms tend to damage your hair less but also give less strong curls that last not very long. Hot perms tend to damage your hair a little more but give longer lasting curls. This is why we don’t allow customers with bleached hair to perm because the hair might break very easily, making your hair extremely frizzy.
